SBY's Influence over Sri Mulyani's Resignation

Kompas.com - 05/05/2010, 14:23 WIB

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has confirmed her appointment  as World Bank (WB) Executive Director but she was still waiting for President Yudhoyono’s consent.

"The news about my appointment to a World Bank position is correct but I am still waiting for President Yudhoyono’s consent," Sri Mulyani said after speaking at a seminar on taxation at Pacific Place Jakarta here on Wednesday.

But for the time being she said she would continue to carry out her tasks as usual.

"For the time being in this transitional week I will concentrate on my tasks while waiting from President Yudhoyono’s consent," Sri Mulyani said, adding that she would hold a press conference on Wednesday afternoon in relation with her appointment as a World Bank executive director.

The World Bank in a statement on Tuesday said Sri Mulyani would be appointed as executive director of the World Bank group. The finance minister was questioned for six hours on Tuesday by officials of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) over her decision to bail out Bank Century in 2008.

"I was grilled from 2pm through 8pm with a half-hour break for evening prayers," Sri Mulyani said after the questioning.

She said the questioning was done by three officials from KPK while she was all by herself in the session and no lawyer accompanied her.

"KPK wished to get a picture (of the problem) or check statements, figures and others. It is more about verification on many  things," she said.

She said what she told KPK was not different from what she had explained before the House inquiry committee or the Supreme Audit Board. Why it was not her that had to go to KPK, Mulyani said they had indeed invited her to come to KPK but as all documents are kept at the finance ministry it was finally decided that it was the KPK officials that would come to her office.

"I did not see any privileges or discriminative treatment in terms of place of questioning," she said. The questioning on Tuesday was the second after the one done on April 29, 2010.
